Open School Board - BOSSE : A Ray of Hope for School Dropouts

In India, literacy is important for social and economic advancement. If we have a literate India, we can imagine an educated India. An Open Board in India works to provide a very flexible type of education to children from rural areas, school dropouts, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, specially challenged persons, women, and others. Open schools provide quality education to allow over-aged dropouts or failed students to complete their education, as well as to expedite literacy in India, given the necessity to accelerate the pace and progress of secondary, senior secondary, and vocational education.

CBSE initiated the open school Board concept in 1979 to encourage children who do not have access to formal education to participate. The National Open School (NOS) was formed a decade later, in 1989, and was renamed the National Institute of Open Schooling(NIOS) in 2002. Today, it is one of the world's largest open schools, offering a wide range of vocational, life enrichment, and community-oriented courses at the secondary and senior secondary levels.

The Open School Board is one of the extremely few venues where pupils are not formally educated. However, it goes even further: students are not compelled to attend classes daily; instead, they study at their own pace, and this distinction provides them with a haven from the usual cultural pressure to learn. Nobody makes fun of them for being bad students. This means that no learner would feel self-conscious about his failure to comprehend a subject.
