Skill Education - BOSSE, an Open School Board in India

In today's dynamic world, learning goes beyond the academic. Education, therefore, has to be structured in such a way that the child learns to cope with the stress and frustrations she will inevitably face in her daily life. Reading, writing and, mathematics are just one part of a future professional life. Training in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and, Math) is the call of the future. However, spatial training and problem solving are critical for a balanced life.

It's rightly observed that when a youngster is entering the professional world, potential employers are not merely assessing educational qualifications. They are judging the candidate on various other factors, through a series of specially designed interviews and tests. Problem-solving capabilities, aptitude for decision making and, teamwork are the focus. The better a candidate proves herself in these areas, the stronger are the chances of professional and personal success.

SO WHAT EXACTLY ARE LIFE SKILLS?

Simply put, life skills are an individual's ability to face daily challenges, manage thoughts, actions and solve problems. An extended meaning includes teamwork and delivering results. Life skills are therefore, an essential part and parcel of a healthy and happy life. It is aptly said 'learning never ends. Imbibing life skills is an ongoing process, an exercise in self-improvement. We have to practice this daily to better ourselves.

Humans have a strong inbuilt weapon. It is called introspection. Introspection helps identify mistakes, anger issues, impulsive behaviors, negativity and, a lack of appreciation. The list goes on and on. The consequences of an action taken can make us wary of repeating that behavior.

But how does one recognize that there is a problem? Are we able to introspect? If we cannot identify the problem, how do we even solve it? This is in itself a daunting task. Enter life skills. Years of training will help in that one moment of doubt. And the earlier this training begins, the better results it would show.

HOW DO LIFE SKILLS WORK?

Life skill education is a holistic exercise. There are several indicators of how it benefits. The most important is in creating self-awareness, the art of giving importance to self. At the same time, it teaches the relevance of teamwork. Problem-solving analyses are an integral part of life skills training. As are assuming responsibility and accepting the consequences of an action taken.

These are all extremely difficult steps to tackle. The path to decision-making and accountability is full of thorns. Yet, confidence is built only through this ordeal by fire.

HOW TO IMBIBE LIFE SKILLS IN A CHILD?

When a child moves out of the comfort of her home to attend school, her transition to another world commences. At school, she is one of many. She has to integrate with society, her peers and, adults. At this stage, the more the child is encouraged to take decisions and be accountable, the more she gets trained in life skills.

When an educator, for example, lets the child choose crayons for coloring, or, for that matter, what artwork to make, they are enhancing life skills. Similarly, when a parent at home lets the child decide her choice of clothes, it's a life lesson being given.

Gentle guiding is encouraged as that will align with confidence building. But letting the child make the final decisions is a great life skill. Making these 'simple' decisions are in reality, mammoth tasks. The child is adapting to changes and responding to challenges. This is the first step in life skills training. Other methodologies such as discussions, demonstrations, role-play activities further help in cementing the ideals.

The world is truly a global village today. Migrations, emigrations, integration of trading markets, interlinking of productions, all are necessitating that we learn to live in a world of adjustments and accommodations. Life skills training here plays a crucial role in creating awareness of cultural pluralities and respect for diversities. This is the only way a tolerant society can be built, thus benefitting all.
